We normally tackle one project at a time but these days, it makes more sense to work on multiple projects. During our time down south, we made a plan to build a pergola over the deck area from the house to the barbecue and started with the posts this past week. Stuart dug deep holes for the sauna tubes and poured concrete while I primed and painted the pergola lumber. We put the posts up a few days ago and they are ready for a final coat of paint.
In between the pergola jobs, we also worked on the garden and spent a few hours tilling and picking up rocks. No matter how many we pick up, there are always more to find. Fortunately, they are fairly small rocks and shouldn't be a problem. Yesterday, we planted the garden with seeds for the root vegetables like carrots, onions and beets as well as seeds for peas, beans, lettuce and spinach. Stuart planted bedding plants of tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, herbs, cucumbers and eggplant and built a box frame for growing potatoes under straw. Here’s what the garden looks like:
I also planted flowers in the bed at the front of the house and realized that it is the first time that I’ve ever had a full flower bed. In the past, I always planted flowers in containers so this will be a real treat to manage. Of course, we had to put up netting to keep the deer out but it doesn’t look obvious.
Now that the garden is in, we’ll get back to working on the pergola in between lawn mowing, week whacking and other yard maintenance. Our next story will be about a fishing boat…..
