OH, DEER!!

As fall starts to settle in and the leaves start changing colour, the deer move in from the mountains to look for food.  During the summer, they are content to “eat at home” and just browse the neighbourhoods for easy pickings.  Most people have their gardens and yards fenced to keep the deer out but still have plants and shrubs in open areas during the summer.  However, at this time of year, they put up extra fencing around free standing plants to protect them from the voracious deer.

Our yard is fenced with both high and low fencing but the driveway is open so the deer are able to come in if they want to.  We never had any in the yard all summer and then about 2 weeks ago, they came in and ate the beautiful gladiolus that bloomed in our garden.  There is a crabapple tree in the neighbour’s yard beside our driveway and we think that it started the attraction to our place.

We put wire around the gladioli in the garden to protect them and then noticed that the deer were starting to eat the tips of the plants that we transplanted to the side of the house.  Grrr!!

All that hard work so they could have a free lunch.  Well, not for long.
We purchased fence wire and put it up to keep them away as much as possible.  It’s only a 4 foot fence but it should deter them for now.  So our transplants are now “in jail” behind wire fencing.

Other than battling the deer, we’ve continued doing things in the yard and in the shop, enjoying the nice weather that we’ve had the past few days.  On Saturday, we went for a drive to Jewel Lake which is 15 km north of Greenwood, about 45 minutes northwest of here.  It’s a beautiful lake with a resort at one end, a small community half way up the lake and a provincial park at the far end.  The weather was clear and sunny with a temperature of 24.  We checked out all the boat launches in anticipation of going fishing there next year.  There were about 6 boats out of the lake and we watched one guy catch a couple of fish not too far from shore.  It sure made us want to be out there fishing.

The blog is one day early this week as we’re having friends come to visit us for the next few days and we’ll be busy doing fun stuff.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
