It’s been 9 years since we bought our place here in Grand
Forks and we’ve kept the firepit located between the house and the shop.
We used it for burning woodworking scraps and small branches but very seldom for
a “campfire”. The wind swirls around the area so no matter where you are, the
smoke blows in your face.
This year we took the firepit out and as usual, it was a bigger
job than expected. As we started digging around the concrete, we saw that it
was at least 2 feet in depth and therefore, would be very heavy and awkward to manage.
We used the truck to pull the ring out of the ground and it
broke into pieces as we pulled. That was a good thing as we were able to put
the pieces on a hand cart and move them to the back behind the shop.
Once it was all cleaned up and the numerous wheelbarrow
loads old ashes and debris shoveled out, Stuart started filling the area with
good soil from our sod pile.
We roughed out a shape and then planted 3 decorative
grasses. They are nice to look at and the deer won’t bother them.
We added the blue crane named Frasier that we bought on our
trip to Osoyoos. As you can tell he is happy with his new home.
