FINISHING THE SHED

The siding was fairly easy to install as we had done it before many years ago when we lived in Salmon Arm.  For this project, we used the old siding from the back of the shop for the short ends of the shed and purchased new pieces for the long side.  The most difficult part is determining the height for the starter strip, so the siding matches all the way around and to the shop.  Once that’s in place, it snaps on and is nailed in place.  We spent a couple of partial days working on that.

We moved on to the finishing process which was more finicky and took more time.  We had leftover soffit pieces from our carport and used them under the roof overhangs on the 3 sides.  We added facia to the ends of the rafters with customized pieces of vinyl siding so we won’t need to paint anything in the future.  We put flashing on the roof under the shop siding and on top of the metal roofing.  The weather changed just as we started the work and we finished up in the rain.  It has been wet at times this spring.

Inside the shed, Stuart installed 2 ceiling lights with a switch by the door.  He had previously installed a solar powered light that just wasn’t bright enough.  Next, we nailed bridging boards between the studs and Stuart built a long shelf on the high side to store extra materials like siding and soffit.  Stuart built a ramp to the door using a piece of composite decking that a friend didn’t need anymore.

We moved the snowblower, chipper/shredder and rototiller into the shed and then filled up the back wall with the winter boxes for the roses and our window well covers.  There was room for extra landscape ties and posts so they will stay clean and dry.  Still lots of room left for other things that we might want to store in there.  It was a wonderful project, that turned out great and we enjoyed every part of it.

In between all that and golf, I planted tomatoes, some peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and squashes in the garden.  More of the planted seeds are sprouting now but I am not impressed with the performance of the seed tapes that I made.  I’ll probably go back to direct seeding next year.  The greenhouse is still quite full as I’m waiting for warmer weather before planting more.  It’s all good.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
