FINISHED WITH THE MAJOR TASKS

We’ve been on our lot for 3 weeks now and all the major tasks have been completed.  After setting up the shed and outside kitchen storage cabinets and moving things around a bit, it is all functional and comfortable.  We have different sitting areas so we can get full sun, moderate shade or full roof shade.  Wonderful!!

The weather has continued to be cool, but we are on a warming trend now and the guys were able to finish the louvre/awning jobs.  The first one was a vertical panel that went above an angled one over the outside kitchen.

The one behind the RV seemed more complicated so we were waiting for a contractor to come and do the job.  Well, he wasn’t showing up and not communicating, so the guys decided they had the skills and time to get it done.  Once the plan was made, the job was done in stages with a cross beam going up first and then modifying brackets for the side supports.

On Friday, they got busy in the morning and lifted the panel up to attach it to the roof beam and then they calculated the position and length of the side arms.  A little challenging to cut the material to length when you only have a limited tool selection.  Anyway, they got it done in a couple of hours and the result is great.  The back of the RV is now has a lot more shade and the panel doesn’t block our view.  Great job, guys!!

There was a eucalyptus tree at the front corner of the lot and we kept thinking that it was rather unattractive as well as needing a lot of maintenance.  Every time we were told that it will need pruning a couple of times a year, Stuart said “don’t worry, I’ll prune it.” When we requested the work permit for the lot, the bylaw enforcement guys highly recommended removing the tree.  Good for us!! So one morning, Stuart got the saw out and did his pruning (i.e. we cut it down).  It took 2 trips to the dump with the branches, but we’ve kept the trunk section in the back to dry out.  It might make an interesting landscape item.  We’ve treated the stump with Round up and hope that it doesn’t sprout up over the summer when we’re gone.  Some of the neighbours liked the tree, some didn’t.

During all this, we had our tap dance performances at the annual show and the attendance was huge, about 600 people.  There were 9 club skits/performances and our tappers did 2 dance routines.  I was in both dances and had more fun this year as I was a bit more relaxed.  However, it can be intimidating up there on the stage in front of that many people.  We don’t have the videos yet to share and as Stuart was helping out with the sound system, he wasn’t able to take any photos.  Rumours are that our costumes were cute!!

So, the countdown is on but we’re still having too much fun to be eager to head home!!

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
