GREENHOUSE

We arrived home on schedule (just over 2 weeks ago) and settled in within 2 days.  It seems like there is less to do here than when we set up in the RV on the rental lot down south.  It is wonderful to be home again with all the comforts and so many things to do.  We still had some snow in front of the garage and Stuart took the opportunity to use our snow blower for the first time.

Our first project was setting up the greenhouse that we’d purchased through Costco.ca.  It was delivered a few days before we returned but we waited a few days after we got home before getting started.  Last fall we laid out concrete pads for the base, so we put a 2 by 6” wooden frame on top of that to support the greenhouse base.

After that the weather was cool and windy so we had to wait again before getting a start on the rest of the project.  It was all going well until we discovered 2 broken pieces for the front section on either side of the door.  We contacted the supplier right away and they promised to send out replacement pieces as soon as possible.  So Stuart fabricated 2 metal bands to hold the structure in place and we continued building as much as we could.

We went ahead with building the door inside the shop and Stuart built the workbenches for inside the greenhouse.  Of course, they needed to be painted so we were busy for a while.  It took 8 days for the replacement pieces to arrive and we were both getting anxious to complete the work.

Finally, on Tuesday of this week, the parts were delivered and we worked all afternoon getting the front finished and the roof on.

The door was easy to install, and we finished installing the roof vent panel on yesterday morning.  It was a good project, everything fit well and the finished product is wonderful!!

Yesterday, Stuart installed an electrical outlet inside so we have power for a heater.  With an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer, we can keep track of the temperatures and manage the venting and heating as needed.

I have some herb seeds germinating out there now and will be doing vegetables after we get the night time heater set up.  Still frosty in the mornings.

Great to be home and getting things going again.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
