DECKING AGAIN

The small deck that we built 6 years ago was deteriorating so we decided to resurface it with the Trex decking like we used on the big deck.  We ordered the products locally and were able to bring them home in our truck rather than having them delivered as before.

First steps were to remove the old deck boards and again we unscrewed them and salvaged the good boards.

We used them to double up on the joists for more support and it is stronger than ever.  Stuart sprayed the boards with a water sealer before we started putting on the deck boards.

As the deck is 12 feet by 12 feet, and we ordered 12 foot boards, we didn’t have to cut any boards to length and it was smooth sailing all the way from one end to the other.  The only challenge was moving the gazebo out of the way while we were laying boards.  Fortunately, it wasn’t heavy and after we attached skids to the feet, we were able to shift it back and forth to complete the job.

Once the boards were down, we secured the gazebo in the new location and then put the top back on it.  We still have to build the step from the big deck down to the small one but Stuart has all the plans drawn out and the material ready to go.

It is very cozy under the gazebo and we decided that it would be nice to set up a conversation area there and not have to keep moving chairs from the big deck.  When we were in Kelowna, we bought a nice set from Walmart and it fits perfectly under the gazebo.

The plants in the greenhouse are flourishing and I’m having fun seeing new sprouts every day.  We’ve had to keep some heat on during the nights which helps a lot.  It will be a few weeks before the plants are ready to move out to the garden.

Meanwhile, I’ve planted carrots, beets, cabbage, beans, lettuce, spinach, kale and kohl rabi out in the garden.

We have been very busy since we got home and are loving every minute of it.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
