In September, we had friends visit with us for a few days
and we went on a long walk along the Trans Canada Trail where it crosses the
Kettle River near Christina Lake. It was
a very warm day and even though the railway grade is gently sloped, it was
still a good workout.
We continued to golf frequently until last week when the
weather turned colder. There were a few
frost delays in the morning but we still played our 18 holes during the warmest
part of the day. The front 9 holes have
been closed since the beginning of October for the rebuild of the 40 year old
irrigation system. Playing the back 9
twice is okay for the short term, not as challenging as the full 18.
Around home, we slowly started cleaning up the garden after
a heavy frost on Oct 2. We pulled up the
plants and shredded most of them into mulch that we spread around the
garden. Stuart tilled the soil last
weekend and all that is left in the ground are some carrots and kale. It was a great growing season; best ever for
peppers and tomatoes.
So the new project that I mentioned in the last posting was
fixing up an old patio table and refinishing the top with pennies. I had the inspiration from a TV show where
they did a section of floor and have been collecting pennies since the
spring. Thanks to all my friends and
family who donated pennies!! Polishing
the pennies was the biggest challenge and we ended up using metal polish to get
the copper shine brighter. Once I
prepared and leveled the surface, I glued the pennies on in concentric circles
and sealed the surface and sides with a 2 part epoxy.
Another small project that we just finished is the
rebuilding and making of wooden hummingbirds with spinning wings. We’ve had the one hummingbird for many years
and it needed new wings so Stuart thought it would be nice to make a couple
more. They will be fun to watch at our
new lot in Happy Trails.
We are now 2 weeks away from heading to Arizona and are
getting things put away for the winter. It
is an enjoyable job when you don’t have to rush and nice to know that all the
equipment will be ready to go in the spring.
