GARDEN BENCH

A week ago, we went out for dinner in Colville, WA with friends of ours to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary.  We made a quick stop at Walmart and we saw a beautiful concrete garden bench at an excellent price of $59.  Even though it was heavy, our friends were gracious enough to let us load it into their car and bring it home.

Stuart mixed up some epoxy sealant that I painted on the bench pieces to protect them from the sprinklers.

Work in progress.

We put the bench out in our newest landscape area and created a level spot with a gravel base for the bench.  It was a fun job, didn’t take long and it looks great.  We have already sat on in many times in the past week.

The garden seeds are sprouting and yesterday we put in the bedding plants (tomatoes, hot and sweet peppers, eggplant, basil and cucumbers).  The weather has turned from very hot and sunny to warm and cloudy today so the plants should settle in very well.

In the past couple of years, we have planted our butternut squash and zucchini outside the garden plot in areas by the house or near the shop.  We did that again this year and some little critter came along and ate the butternut squashes.  All that is left are little stems sticking out of the ground.

They didn’t eat the zucchini but I put wire cages around them right away and will do the same with the replacement squashes.

We have a marmot hanging around in the area and also a covey of quail has been roaming the yard.  We suspect that they are the culprits.  However, we don’t want to chase them away as they are fun to watch and to listen to when they call out “Chicago.”

Our plans for getting out on the lake and playing golf keep getting overridden by other priorities.  We made a trip to Kelowna to purchase some edging stones and then had to take the car to Castlegar for some warranty work.  Always something to do.

My knee is improving every day but I am still very cautious about trying to do too much yet.  It’s still early in the season.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
