HUNKERING DOWN

Our weather turned cold shortly after Christmas which means night time temperatures of 0 to minus 2 and day time highs of 7 to 9.  Most days were sunny but some were cloudy and it was like that for almost a week.  We had to switch out our water hose to the insulated one with attached heat tape to ensure that our water supply didn’t freeze.  Inside, we had our electric fireplace and electric baseboard heater going most of the days when we were inside.  It is easier to use electric heat than the propane furnace as we have to take the tanks out to get them filled or wait until a truck comes around in the park.  During the holiday season, they weren’t around much.

On Dec 31 in the early afternoon, a main waterline broke just a few lots away from us and there were rivers of water running down 2 streets.  We figured they would be shutting off the water soon so we quickly filled our RV fresh water tank and I filled a number of containers with water for drinking and making coffee.  In the shed, Stuart filled buckets with water so we could flush the toilet out there.  As it turned out, the water was shut off within half an hour and wasn’t back on until the middle of the next day.  We were fine with our water onboard.  Not having water is easier to manage than not having power.

A few blog posts ago, I showed pictures of the neighbour’s plant that shot up a huge tree over the summer.  Well, it reached its maturity and started to slowly die.  It didn’t change colour or wither very much but it did start leaning over further and further.  I took photos and was hoping to track it until it fell down on its own, but the neighbour came out and knocked it down instead.  It would have been interesting to see how long it took to drop by itself.

My knee started hurting a lot on Boxing Day so I had to back off all activities and rest it completely.  That was challenging as there are only so many things you can do in the RV.  Walking around was difficult so when we went out for groceries, I had to use the little power scooters that they provide in the store.  No one paid much attention as there are lots of the scooters being used.  My knee is improving with the rest but it’s obvious that I have to see a specialist back in BC.  Not sure when that will happen.

Keeping busy with puzzles.

On January 17 we head over to Escondido, California for a two week “vacation” in a condo.  We are using weeks from our timeshare and it will be nice to have a change of scenery.  Should be lots of interesting things to post to the blog, so stay tuned.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
