HOME AGAIN

The trip home from Surprise, Arizona was good with interesting scenery and a variety of weather conditions, including a strong wind for quite a few hours.  We left our 5th wheel in Arizona again, so the wind and weather wasn’t much of a concern.  The section of road between Flagstaff and Page was a mix of forest and shrubs to start and then wide open desert with plenty of red rock formations.

The town of Page is beside the Glen Canyon dam which holds back the Colorado River to form Lake Powell.  This lake is at the eastern end of the Grand Canyon and is popular for all types of recreational boating.  We stopped for lunch and looked around in the visitor centre.

The road continued through scrubby desert to Kanab and then we went north between 2 mountain ranges with Zion on one side and Bryce Canyon on the other side.  It’s beautiful country with plenty of areas for hiking and sightseeing.

Mid-afternoon we took a road across to I-15 and drove north at 130 kilometres per hour (without exceeding the speed limit) and stopped for the night at Nephi, which is about an hour south of Salt Lake City.

We woke up to snow on the ground but not on the roads and headed out early along with many other snowbirds who had stayed at the same motel.  The weather improved to mixed clouds and sun although we drove through a big rain shower in Salt Lake City.  The drive through Salt Lake City wasn’t onerous this time as we were able to drive in the HOV lane for most of the way and there weren’t many vehicles using it.  It was much better than towing the trailer through that section.

The drive from there to Missoula had less traffic and fewer towns to go through but we did drive through about 5 snowstorms.  Fortunately, they didn’t last long and the snow wasn’t sticking to the roads.

We spent the night in Missoula, Montana and drove home through Spokane the next day.  The border crossing was quick and easy and we were home in the mid-afternoon on April 3.

All was well at home and it was great to have all the comforts of more space and privacy again.  It has taken us a few days to get unpacked and settled in and soon we will begin spring projects.  And the cycle continues…..

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
