THANKSGIVING

Well, here we are at Thanksgiving day and we have so much to be thankful for.  The good weather lasted through September and we continued to golf twice a week.  We will miss our lush green course over the winter!!

The garden kept going until a heavy frost this past Thursday so we quickly harvested the remaining veggies and Stuart was able to till the garden on Saturday.  I put the extra tomatoes in the greenhouse to ripen along with 2 habanero plants that I dug out of the garden.  It looks like we’ll get 4 or 5 fiery hot habaneros.

A couple of weeks ago, we started a new building project behind the shop.  We are constructing an 8 foot by 16 foot “shed” that will be attached to the shop and have a sloped roof.  It will be fully enclosed with a door and we plan to store the less frequently used small equipment, maybe the lawn mowers and tools and other things that should be protected from the summer sun.

We leveled the area and poured 9 concrete pads as footings.  We attached laminated beams to the footings and then used salvaged 2 by 6 deck boards for the floor joists.  A great way to use up surplus material.  After that, we put on ¾ inch 4 ft by 8 ft OSB sheets and sealed the floor with primer and 2 coats of porch and floor paint.  We have covered it with a tarp for the winter and will continue the build in the spring.

The floor paint gave us the idea to paint the garage floor so we made a quick trip to Castlegar to get more paint on sale at Canadian Tire.  We cleaned out the garage, pressure washed it and painted the floor, no primer but 2 color coats.  It dried fast and sure made it look clean and new.  A good opportunity to re-organize and to sort out things that have been stored in the garage for a while.

Last Tuesday, we had another wind storm that was unexpected and again, we had some damage.  This time the wind ripped apart the tarp that covered our boathouse and it was a real mess.  We cleaned it up, salvaged some of the tarp pieces and put another tarp around the boat.  The boathouse looks like a dinosaur skeleton now.

It’s not a problem for us as we put our boat in the shop for the winter but our friend who usually winters his boat in the boathouse may have to do something else.  He can still park it there and provide his own tarp.  Not sure yet what we’ll do next summer.

So today is Thanksgiving and we’re not having turkey.  Say what??  We cooked one a couple of weeks ago and yesterday, we had turkey dinner at the church so nothing special today.  Sometimes it’s good to do something different.

Well, 3 weeks until we head to Arizona.  Where has the time gone?

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
