Yesterday, we headed
northeast out of the city for a 4 hour loop drive through the Superstition
Mountains.
It was such a delight to
go from the buzz of traffic to the quiet of a cactus forest.
We've had plenty of rain
in the first half of January and the water is still working its way down the
mountains to the valley bottom. We stopped at a side road for photos but we didn't try this crossing.
Further along the road,
we came to Theodore Roosevelt Lake which was man-made by a dam. The lake was muddy
and the shoreline is not very interesting. However, it must be a very
popular place in the summer as there were campsites and picnic areas along the
way and a very large marina at the south end of the lake. Not the same as
our green forested lakeshores in BC.
At the next junction, we drove through the mining towns of Globe, Claypool and Miami. There were multiple
copper mines in the mountains around there and we even saw a black slag pile
that reminded us of Grand Forks.
The scenery was great
all the way back to the city and the desert was green after all the rains.
Tomorrow we head back to
the RV for the rest of our stay in Arizona.
