GRAND FORKS FALL FAIR

This year the Grand Forks fall fair was scheduled for Aug 22-24 which was a bit early for a fall fair but still late enough to include a good selection of fruit and vegetable entries.  Our church volunteered to help out with the set up and take down chores to support the few members of the fall fair committee.

We started on the Tuesday morning before the fair and first worked inside the curling rink to cover the walls with colourful sheets.

We also helped set up tables for displaying the entry items and tables for various vendors.  We had about 8 people working on that and were able to get it done by early afternoon.

Stuart then joined a group outside to set up a covered structure similar to our boat garage.  They had no printed instructions and there were additional parts in the package so it took quite a while to get it pieced together.  Eventually they got it done but we all agreed that it wasn’t exactly correct.  It held up in the winds though, and it was dry underneath during the rain showers.

We continued the next day with final touches inside and set up smaller gazebos outside.  That was about half a day’s work.  Stuart and I didn’t go back to work until Saturday morning when we helped out with making and serving a pancake breakfast.  Seems like we do a lot of volunteer cooking during our season at home.

The church volunteers helped out with collecting and displaying the exhibit items and hosting some of the activities such as a Survivor competition, Zucchini races and Mechanical Bull Riding.  Stuart and I entered crafts in the fair this year and won first prizes for stained glass, a hooked rug and a crocheted vest.  It was a fun thing to do and also a good thing to support to the fair.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
