FOURTH SECOND SATURDAY

We attended our fourth second Saturday volunteer event that was at our local church campus.  We had a total of 500 volunteers and the tasks were to prepare disaster relief buckets and personal hygiene kits for a variety of organizations such as women’s shelters, a children’s hospital, homeless shelters and a “single Mom’s with cancer” organization.  Last year, the disaster relief buckets that they filled were sent to Oklahoma after the devastating tornadoes in that state.

As usual, the volunteers were divided into groups for the various tasks and we started out working on the personal hygiene kits.  Tables had to be set up, the boxes of supplies brought in, sorted out and labelled and then the task of filling the bags.

We also had volunteers making personalized coloured cards to be included in the kits for the children, another group was writing personalized notes in journals and others were making bookmarks to go in the journals.  We helped out with the journal notes after we finished our kits and found that it took about 3-4 minutes to write the notes in the front of the book.  We’re used to using a keyboard for communicating, not writing with a pen and paper anymore.

Here are some of the statistics from the event:

100 disaster relief buckets
835 personalized journals
1200 personal hygiene kits
2000 cards

Again, it was an enjoyable morning for a good cause.  We are looking forward to the next one in March.

Back here at the resort, we’ve been playing pickleball, visiting with friends and Stuart has been playing in some billiards tournaments.  The weather is warming up and the birds are singing so spring has arrived in our area.  It’s wonderful that we get two spring seasons, one here and one after we get back home.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, we’re going to see a movie this morning and then go out for lunch.  Stuart will be barbecuing steaks for supper which will be a treat.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
