BASS FISHING

The highlight of our time in Orlando so far was our bass fishing trip on Tuesday.  We were up early and were picked up by our fishing guide at 6:15 a.m..  He drove us to the nearby Butler chain of lakes where he launched the 20 ft Skeeter bass fishing boat powered by a 250 hp Yamaha outboard motor.  There were 5 or 6 other boats launching at sunrise as well but most of them went off in a different direction.

We crossed one small lake, went through a cypress tree lined channel, crossed another lake and then went to the north end of Butler Lake.

The lakes are surrounded by expensive homes (mansions) owned by celebrities like Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson and Shaquille O’Neal.  It seems strange to have such a contrast between the elaborate properties and the marsh edged bass lake.  One place that we saw from the water is the largest home in North America at 90,000 sq ft.  Check out the link:

We used spin casting rods and live bait (shiners) that cost $20 a dozen.  The guide hooked the bait on for us and then we were on our own to catch the fish.  Here’s how it works.  You throw your line out and troll slowly along with the shiner on the hook.  When the shiner starts wiggling around, you know that it is trying to avoid a bass so you wait until the bass starts to swallow the shiner, then you slowly point the tip of your rod towards the fish and then give it a mighty yank to set the hook.  You reel in like crazy until you get the largemouth bass to the boat.

We had a slow start as the water was very calm but things picked up and we caught some bass and a pickerel at the north end of the lake.  We moved to the south end and had a feeding frenzy when we were both catching fish quite frequently.  The fish averaged between 4 and 5 pounds and we took a couple of photos of the bigger ones that we caught.

Partway through the morning, I caught a huge bass that was about 9 lbs. and the guide said that it was one of the largest fish he’d seen in that lake.  I got it all the way to the boat and just as he was about to pull it out of the water, it slipped off the hook and swam away.  Now I have a true story about the monster fish that got away.

We fished from sunrise to about 1:30 p.m. and caught and released a total of 16 fish.  Not bad for half a day on the water.  It was an amazing experience that we’ll never forget.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
