BACK TO THE ROUTINE

We made it safely to our Arizona home from Orlando on Feb 2 and all was well here.  It took us a few days to adjust to the 2 hour time difference but we settled back into our usual activities very quickly.  We enjoyed the 2 week break though, and might take a little side trip again next winter.  The weather here wasn’t bad the first few days we were back and then we had another cold snap that put night time temperatures near freezing for 3 days.  I was playing pickleball on Monday afternoon when a big wind and rainstorm moved in and cancelled our play.  We saw a flock of geese in their V formation flying south again—maybe they were headed to Mexico.

The biggest excitement for us these days is a hummingbird that built a nest in our cactus and is now sitting on two eggs.  She worked for about a week building the nest out of tiny twigs, white cottony material and she has “glued” it all together using spider webs.  It’s been fun to watch her bring in the various building materials and then work them into place using her beak, feet and body.

CAN YOU FIND THE NEST?

We spotted the two eggs about 5 days ago and we’re now waiting around like expectant grandparents.  She doesn’t mind us being around as long as we don’t get too close to the nest.  I’ve had to chase a few bigger birds away from the area—they’ve been eyeing the nest when Mom has flown away for a break.  Hope they don’t do any harm.

Not much else to report right now but I’m sure something interesting will come up soon.  At the very least, we should have some hummingbird hatchlings to write about.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
