DISNEY’S MAGIC KINGDOM

Last Friday, we headed out to the Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World for a whole new adventure.  Rather than multi-storey parkades, they have huge, open parking lots so it was nice to be early and park near the monorail station.  We boarded the monorail that made 2 stops at Disney World Hotels along the way and then we were in line at the entrance.

It seems like everything in Disney World revolves around Mickey Mouse so just before opening, we were treated to a welcome show with singing, dancing and Mickey Mouse himself.

We had specific rides and attractions that we wanted to see and headed over to the most popular one first, Space Mountain.  It was temporarily closed so we picked up Fastpass tickets that gave us a 1 hour future time slot to return and get on the ride without waiting in line.  We walked around the perimeter of the park and went into the Haunted Mansion first and then took a ride on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  It is a roller coaster ride but not high tech like the ones at Universal Studios.  I did all right on it but found myself lifting off the seat a couple of times as we went over the crest of hills.

By then it was Space Mountain time so off we went.  I thought it was going to be a mild roller coaster ride that went through simulated space with planets, stars and constellations to be viewed along the way.  Wrong again!!  It started out like you were in a spaceship shooting out of the mothership and then it became a violent roller coaster ride in the dark.  You couldn't see much of anything and never knew which direction you were going next.  I was totally stressed out and couldn't wait for it to end.  I was so tense during the ride that my head was aching when I got out of the car and even Stuart wasn't all that impressed with the ride.  That’s four roller coaster rides for me in one week—almost four too many.

The rest of the attractions were very sedate and included a Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, a climb up the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, a Country Bear Jamboree and the Enchanted Tiki House.

The Carousel of Progress was a replica of the 1964 Worlds Fair version presented in New York City.  It demonstrated household progress from the early 1900’s to the present, from candles to voice activated lighting, ice chests to automatic icemakers, radios and small TV’s to huge TV’s and video games.  Very interesting.

In front of the big castle, they had parades every couple of hours and street parties to get people involved.

We stayed to watch the Dream Along with Mickey show that featured many of the favourite Disney characters and a little story where the evil witch gets banished by the good guys.  Always a happy ending in the Magic Kingdom.

We rode the steam train around the perimeter of the park at the end of our day and then boarded a ferry boat back to our parking lot.

We were impressed by the number of staff on site in the park and how helpful they were if you had questions.  Glad we had the chance to see it all.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
