OUR TRIP BACK TO BC

We arrived in Las Vegas in the early afternoon on April 4 and took a casino shuttle to downtown Fremont Street and checked it out, as we hadn't been to that part of Vegas before.  It was interesting to see the kiosks, lots of people walking around, shopping at stores and of course, going into the casinos.  Here are a few street shots.

We left Las Vegas the next day and drove north on highway 93 through eastern Nevada to Wells which is where we stayed on our way south last October.  We had great weather most of the way and then it started snowing a few miles south of Wells.  Same as last fall, we arrived at the RV park in a snowstorm, but this storm lasted a bit longer this time.  We hunkered down for the night and the next day dawned sunny but cold (about -5).

We continued on Highway 93 and then west along I-84 to Baker City, Oregon.  Again, about half an hour away from our destination, it started to snow and blow and was quite ugly when we arrived at that RV park.  Again, we hunkered down for the night and the next day was sunny but cool at -2.

Our drive to La Grande, Oregon (about 40 miles) was okay and then we got into the high elevation passes and there was snow all around and the roads were wet with a few slushy sections.  It had cooled down to -5 by then but the road surface wasn’t icy and we had no problems along the way.  There was evidence of vehicles going off the road the day before and still a couple of them getting towed out this morning.  Here are two photos—just a little blurry but then so was I.

Cabbage Hill, which is at end of Deadman’s Pass, is a big elevation drop down to Pendleton.  The roads at the bottom were clear and the sun started shining again.  They have 3 warning signs about the steep grade along the way.  Here’s the last sign.

The rest of the drive to Deer Park north of Spokane was fine and I took my turn towing through the streets of Spokane as we went from I-90 to highway 395 north.  There is no bypass for Spokane so you have to go right through the downtown area and all the way along busy north Division Street.  Stuart usually does the “hard stuff” but I had to get the experience.

We are settled in the Spokane RV Resort and Golf Club where we stayed one night last year and it is still a very nice place.  We are just about the only ones here and the rate is cheaper because the pool isn’t open yet.  The weather is mixed clouds with rain and snow showers in the distance but the grass is getting green and there are golfers on the golf course.

We head out tomorrow morning for the trip home and it will be an exciting day.  It’s good to go somewhere and it’s also good to be going home.

Living Large Defined

After retiring from the BC Forest Service, selling their home in Kamloops and living at "no fixed address" for 10 months, Linda and Stuart bought a house in Grand Forks. They are now embracing life in this small community as well as Snowbirding south for the winter and are living "larger" than their dreams. This is Linda's blog of their adventures.
